CD review: No Ceilings

no ceilingsLil Wayne has been all over the place  recently, but his scattershot raps and lean-induced warblings haven’t indicated the talent that longtime Wayne listeners are familiar with. “No Ceilings” represents his most focused effort in years, and it’s no surprise that it’s the mixtape of the year.

Recorded within the last few weeks, and capitalizing on the hot beats of the past year (it says a lot about the state of popular music that I didn’t recognize more than half of these songs), this mixtape shows Wayne at his best. It’s too bad that he’s off to jail for a while – I’m sure that when he returns, he’ll be back on the AutoTune nonsense.

It’s been a long time since I listened to a mixtape that had this many quotable lines. Wayne rips through most of these songs, and I literally laughed out loud at some of these punchlines:

“Young Weezy, the F is not for failin’/swagger just dumb, call it Sarah Palin”
“I’m in the way/you can’t pass like Aaron Brooks”
“Smoke weed, talk shit like Lane Kiffin”
“Your flow never wet, like grandma’s pussy/I’m always good, like grandma’s cookies”
“Yeah, call me the screen or swine fixer/it’s going down like the Catalina wine mixer”

Given some of these top-flight beats, like “Run This Town” and “D.O.A.,” Wayne steps up his game accordingly. He even manages to flow over Beyonce’s “Beautiful Nightmare” and the horrific “I Gotta Feeling.”

Surprisingly, this Young Money release doesn’t feature rising star Drake, but instead guys like Gudda Gudda, Tyga and Jae Millz, who all rise to the occasion. I’ve never really heard of these guys, but they kept up with the big boss, and for that, they deserve a little more credit than the normal label hangers-on.

I mean, for a free mixtape, you can’t go wrong with this. Maybe Wayne needs to go to jail more often to provide some clarity in his life and provide us with good music.
