Rap video vault: 2 Legit 2 Quit

thevaultReason No. 2,364 why MC Hammer went bankrupt and now has a reality show on A&E: this wildly extravagant video that solidified  his crossover from little-rap-artist-that-could into full-fledged pop superstar.

The lead single of Hammer’s 1991 album of the same name, “2 Legit” is rap’s “November Rain” – a 10-minute opus filled with ridiculous imagery, sweeping camera shots, indulgent solos and the theme of musician as savior. However, like the GnR song, it’s definitely worth watching.

I mean, where else are you going to see James Brown shooting fireballs, Hammer doing cardio during a four-alarm blaze, wild-ass dancing from 20 people wearing Oakland A’s outfits, and cameos from Roger Clemens and Andre Rison? I would love to know who directed this, because I’m sure it was some current name director just getting started in the biz who has since scrubbed all knowledge of his participation in this project.

Sit back and enjoy the pinnacle of the “dancing rap” era – they don’t make em like this anymore.
